    Abstract
The monolithic catalytic converter still is the main pollution control device for modern vehicles in order to reach the ever-increasing legislative demands for low emission standards. The catalytic converters require a large expansion from the exhaust pipe to the front face of the monolith. Unfortunately, packaging constraints often do not permit the use of long diffusers. Hence, flow separation within the diffuser leads to a non-uniform flow distribution across the monolith. A uniform flow distribution at the inlet monolith face is favorable for the conversion efficiency as well as the durability of the catalytic converter. Therefore the main problem is to optimize the flow distribution at...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 793 , 2020 Ghasemi, A ; Kolagar, A. M ; Pouranvari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This study aims at understanding the metallurgical and mechanical response of Hastelloy X nickel-based superalloy to the thermal cycle of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), post welding solution treatment (ST), and aging. In the as-weld condition, the weldment was characterized by the formation of the M6C carbide, sigma phase, and micro-solidification cracks in the interdendritic zones of the weld metal, and constitutional liquation of M6C carbide in the heat-affected zone. It is demonstrated that neither the weld metal nor the heat-affected zone could adversely affect mechanical properties of the welded joint in as-weld condition. However, to alleviate the microstructural heterogeneity,...

    Abstract
This research study aims at investigating the influence of partial solution treatment and the subsequent cooling strategy on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an as-cast Co–Cr–W superalloy. Three different cooling scenarios were employed to explore the effect of cooling rate on the carbide reprecipitation potential from the solid solution formed during the heat treatment. The partial dissolution/breakdown of the continuous network of the Cr-rich M7C3 carbides during the partial solution treatment cycle along with their transformation to M23C6 carbides and formation of secondary carbides during the cooling stage were taken into account to discuss the obtained hardness values,...

Entanglement entropy in long-range harmonic oscillators

    , Article EPL ; Volume 100, Issue 6 , 2012 ; 02955075 (ISSN) Ghasemi Nezhadhaghighi, M ; Rajabpour, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
We study the Von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropy of long-range harmonic oscillators (LRHO) by both theoretical and numerical means. We show that the entanglement entropy in massless harmonic oscillators increases logarithmically with the sub-system size as S = ceff/3 log l. Although the entanglement entropy of LRHOs shares some similarities with the entanglement entropy at conformal critical points we show that the Rényi entanglement entropy presents some deviations from the expected conformal behaviour. In the massive case we demonstrate that the behaviour of the entanglement entropy with respect to the correlation length is also logarithmic as the short-range case

Discrete scale invariance and stochastic Loewner evolution

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; 2010 , Volume 82, Issue 6 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Ghasemi Nezhadhaghighi, M ; Rajabpour, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In complex systems with fractal properties the scale invariance has an important rule to classify different statistical properties. In two dimensions the Loewner equation can classify all the fractal curves. Using the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (WM) function as the drift of the Loewner equation we introduce a large class of fractal curves with discrete scale invariance (DSI). We show that the fractal dimension of the curves can be extracted from the diffusion coefficient of the trend of the variance of the WM function. We argue that, up to the fractal dimension calculations, all the WM functions follow the behavior of the corresponding Brownian motion. Our study opens a way to classify all the...

    Abstract
Purpose - A numerical method is developed to capture the interaction of solid object with two-phase flow with high density ratios. The current computational tool would be the first step of accurate modeling of wave energy converters in which the immense energy of the ocean can be extracted at low cost. Design/methodology/approach - The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are discretized on a regular structured grid, and the two-step projection method along with multi-processing (OpenMP) is used to efficiently solve the flow equations. The level set and the immersed boundary methods are used to capture the free surface of a fluid and a solid object, respectively. The full...

    Abstract
A compartment model was developed to describe the flow pattern of gas within the dense zone of a tapered membrane-assisted fluidized-bed reactor (TMAFBR), in the bubbling mode of operation for steam reforming of methane under wall heat flux. The parameters of the developed model (i.e., number of compartments for the bubble and emulsion phases) were determined using the experimental data reported elsewhere [Adris AM, Lim CJ, Grace JR. The fluidized bed membrane reactor system: a pilot scale experimental study. Chem Eng Sci 1994; 49:5833-43.] and good agreements were obtained between model predictions and corresponding experimental data. The developed model was then utilized to predict the...

    Abstract
Microgrids (MGs) have a special role in developing several consumers' energy infrastructure and supply in more economical, safer, and sustainable ways. The interaction and mutual relationship between each energy carrier on the reliable performance of other carriers and the high growth of tri-generation technologies in the MG face the optimal performance of such networks with many challenges. Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP)-based MGs are a new generation of MGs that simultaneously provide electrical, thermal, and cooling loads. However, the interaction between these carriers is very influential in CCHP-based MG's operation, which is rarely analyzed. Hence, this paper focuses on...

    Abstract
In this study, an auxiliary damping controller based on a robust controller considering the active and reactive power control loops for a doubly-fed induction generator for wind farms is proposed. The presented controller is able to improve the inter-area oscillation damping. In addition, the proposed controller applies only one accessible local signal as the input; however, it can improve the inter-area oscillation damping and, consequently the system stability for the various working conditions and uncertainties. The oscillatory modes of the system are appointed using the linear analysis. Then, the controller’s parameters are determined using the robust control approaches (H∞/ H2) with the...

Photocathodic protection of 316L stainless steel by coating of anatase nanoparticles

    , Article Protection of Metals and Physical Chemistry of Surfaces ; Volume 49, Issue 1 , January , 2013 , Pages 109-112 ; 20702051 (ISSN) Barati, N ; Faghihi Sani, M. A ; Ghasemi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Uniform nanostructure anatase films were coated on 316L stainless steel by the sol-gel dip coating method. Sols with different values of pH were applied. The corrosion protective behavior of coated samples was investigated by electrochemical measurements in 0.5 molar NaCl solutions on samples placed under UV illumination and dark condition using Tafel curves. It was found that in addition to acting as a physical barrier, anatase thin films are more protective under UV illumination due to photocathodic protection. Neutral sols give better protection due to formation of more uniform and less defective coatings

    Abstract
Due to the technical advances in power electronic industry, employing inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBDERs) are increased in electric power systems. Distributed generators (DGs) with the rating capacity of few megawatts are commonly connected to the distribution level of power systems which are inherently unbalanced. A cluster of IBDERs and loads form a small-scale grid called microgrid (MG) which can operate independent of the main grid. In a MG, grid forming voltage source converters (VSCs) are used to control the voltages and frequency of the MG. However, grid forming VSCs with conventional control schemes cannot do this task properly when the MG is unbalanced. In this...

    Abstract
The flexibility of software-based fault tolerant approaches in providing the required level of reliability Commer-cial-Off-The Shelf (COTS) devices made them the first choice in designing safety-critical systems. In this paper, we propose a reliability improvement method for COTS-based systems, so-called, RI-COTS. The main idea behind RI-COTS is to establish a tradeoff between reliability and performance of COTS system through controlling redundant execution at instruction level. RI-COTS is implemented on LEON2 processor VHDL model. Our simulation results show that comparing with the most related studies, RI-COTS can improve the fault detection capability by 20% with only 4% performance...

Computational modeling of blood clot lysis considering the effect of vessel wall and pulsatile blood flow

    Abstract
Stroke is one of the major causes of global death, which can occur due to blockage in a blood vessel by a clot. The immediate dissolving of the clot is essential to restore the blood flow and prevent tissue necrosis. Clot dissolution can be achieved via thrombolytic therapy using plasminogen activators. In this study, a clot dissolution model is developed for a three-dimensional patient-specific carotid artery that investigates the effect of different vessel wall models on clot dissolution. The lysis pattern of the clot and hemodynamics of blood flow are evaluated using three different models of the vessel wall, namely, rigid, linear elastic, and Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic. The effect of...

    Abstract
Smart drug delivery systems (DDSs) have attracted the attention of many scientists, as carriers that can be stimulated by changes in environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, light, electromagnetic fields, mechanical forces, etc. These smart nanocarriers can release their cargo on demand when their target is reached and the stimulus is applied. Using the techniques of nanotechnology, these nanocarriers can be tailored to be target-specific, and exhibit delayed or controlled release of drugs. Temperature-responsive nanocarriers are one of most important groups of smart nanoparticles (NPs) that have been investigated during the past decades. Temperature can either act as an external...
