    Abstract
In this paper, a size-dependent formulation is presented for Timoshenko beams made of a functionally graded material (FGM). The formulation is developed on the basis of the modified couple stress theory. The modified couple stress theory is a non-classic continuum theory capable to capture the small-scale size effects in the mechanical behavior of structures. The beam properties are assumed to vary through the thickness of the beam. The governing differential equations of motion are derived for the proposed modified couple-stress FG Timoshenko beam. The generally valid closed-form analytic expressions are obtained for the static response parameters. As case studies, the static and free...

    Abstract
In this paper, the size-dependent static and vibration behavior of micro-beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are analytically investigated on the basis of the modified couple stress theory in the elastic range. Functionally graded beams can be considered as inhomogeneous composite structures, with continuously compositional variation from usually a ceramic at the bottom to a metal at the top. The governing equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived on the basis of Hamilton principle. Closed-form solutions for the normalized static deflection and natural frequencies are obtained as a function of the ratio of the beam characteristic size to the internal material...

Nonlinear free vibration of nanobeams with surface effects considerations

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 28 August 2011 through 31 August 2011 ; Volume 7 , August , 2011 , Pages 191-196 ; 9780791854846 (ISBN) Fallah, A ; Firoozbakhsh, K ; Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Pasharavesh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, simple analytical expressions are presented for geometrically non-linear vibration analysis of thin nanobeams with both simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity together with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is used to obtain the governing equations of motions of the nanobeam with surface effects consideration. The governing nonlinear partial differential equation is reduced to a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation using Galerkin technique. He's variational approach is employed to obtain analytical solution for the resulted nonlinear governing equation. The effects of different parameters such as vibration amplitude, boundary...

    Abstract
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made of a mixture of metals and ceramics. Properties of these kinds of materials vary continuously and smoothly from a ceramic surface to a metallic surface in a specified direction of the structure. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGMs have extracted much attention as advanced structural materials in recent years. In this paper, free vibration of a rotating FGM cantilever...

    Abstract
The classical continuum theory not only underestimates the stiffness of microscale structures such as microbeams but is also unable to capture the size dependency, a phenomenon observed in these structures. Hence, the non-classical continuum theories such as the strain gradient elasticity have been developed. In this paper, a Timoshenko beam finite element is developed based on the strain gradient theory and employed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of microbeams used in microelectromechanical systems. The new beam element is a comprehensive beam element that recovers the formulations of strain gradient Euler–Bernoulli beam element, modified couple stress (another non-classical theory)...

    A size-dependent yield criterion

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Science ; Vol. 74, issue , Jan , 2014 , p. 151-161 Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Rahaeifard, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a size-dependent non-classical yield criterion is introduced on the basis of the modified couple stress theory in order to capture the size-dependency of the micro-scale structure yielding loads where the attempts of the classical yield criteria such as the von-Mises have been in vain. In order to develop the new yield criterion, the deviatoric part of the micro-scale structure strain energy density, including both classical and non-classical parts, is equated to the deviatoric strain energy density of a macro-size tensile-test sample at the yielding point. For bending of microbeams and torsion of microbars, the size-dependent yielding moments have been determined based on the...

    Abstract
Since the classical continuum theory is neither able to evaluate the accurate stiffness nor able to justify the size-dependency of micro-scale structures, the non-classical continuum theories such as the modified couple stress theory have been developed. In this paper, a new comprehensive Timoshenko beam element has been developed on the basis of the modified couple stress theory. The shape functions of the new element are derived by solving the governing equations of modified couple stress Timoshenko beams. Subsequently, the mass and stiffness matrices are developed using energy approach and Hamilton's principle. The formulations of the modified couple stress Euler-Bernoulli beam element...

    Abstract
The classical continuum theory is neither able to accurately model the mechanical behavior of micro/nano-scale structures nor capable of justifying the size-dependent behavior observed in these structures; so the non-classical continuum theories such as the strain gradient theory have been emerged and developed. In order to enable the finite element method (FEM) to more accurately deal with the problems in micro/nano-scale structures, a size-dependent Euler-Bernoulli beam element is developed based on the strain gradient theory. Compared to the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam element, the nodal displacement vector of the new Euler-Bernoulli beam element has an additional component, i.e. the...

    2011
    Abstract
This paper is devoted to investigate the nonlinear behaviors of a V-shaped microcantilever of an atomic force microscope (AFM) operating in its two major modes: amplitude modulation and frequency modulation. The nonlinear behavior of the AFM is due to the nonlinear nature of the AFM tip-sample interaction caused by the Van der Waals attraction/repulsion force. Considering the V-shaped microcantilever as a flexible continuous system, the resonant frequencies, mode shapes, governing nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations (PDE and ODE) of motion, boundary conditions, frequency and time responses, potential function and phase-plane of the system are obtained analytically. The...

Closed form solutions have been analytically obtained for static deformation, natural frequencies and mode shapes of strain gradient bars. The static deformation and natural frequencies of a clamped-clamped microbar subjected to a uniform axial distributed force are derived analytically and the results are...

    Abstract
In this paper, a size-dependent formulation is developed for Timoshenko beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). The developed formulation is based on the strain gradient theory; a non-classical continuum theory able to capture the size-effect in micro-scaled structures. Five new equivalent length scale parameters are introduced as functions of the constituents' length scale parameters. It is shown that the size-dependent static and dynamic behavior of FG micro-beams can be described using these equivalent length scales. The governing differential equations of motion and both classical and non-classical sets of boundary conditions are derived for the proposed strain gradient FG...

    Abstract
In this paper, the modified couple stress theory is employed to develop a size-dependent beam element able to predict the size-dependency observed in microbeams. The stiffness matrix is obtained for the aforementioned beam element. As an example, the deflection of a microcantilever is evaluated using the proposed beam elements and the results of the finite element method are compared to the analytical results obtained by the classical beam theory. The maximum deflection of the beam is depicted versus the ratio of the beam thickness to the material length scale parameter, the parameter appearing in non-classical continuum theories. The results show that when the characteristic size of the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a nonlinear size-dependent Euler-Bernoulli beam model is developed based on a strain gradient theory, capable of capturing the size effect. Considering the mid-plane stretching as the source of the nonlinearity in the beam behavior, the governing nonlinear partial differential equation of motion and the corresponding classical and non-classical boundary conditions are determined using the variational method. As an example, the free-vibration response of hinged-hinged microbeams is derived analytically using the Method of Multiple Scales. Also, the nonlinear size-dependent static bending of hinged-hinged beams is evaluated numerically. The results of the new model are compared...

    Abstract
In this paper, the nonlinear forced-vibration of Euler-Bernoulli beams with large deflections is investigated based on the modified couple stress theory, a non-classical theory capable of capturing size effects. The classical theory is unable to predict the size effects. In systems with the dimensions in order of microns and sub-microns the size effects are very significant. For some specific beams subjected to a concentrated force at its middle as the harmonic exciter, the size-dependent responses are investigated for primary, super-harmonic and sub-harmonic resonances. The results show that the frequency-responses of the system are highly size-dependent

    Abstract
In this paper, the resonant frequency and sensitivity of atomic force microscope (AFM) microcantilevers are studied using the modified couple stress theory. The classical continuum mechanics is incapable of interpreting micro-structure-dependent size effects when the size of structures is in micron- and sub-micron scales. However, this dependency can be well treated by using non-classical continuum theories. The modified couple stress theory is a non-classic continuum theory which employs additional material parameters besides those appearing in classical continuum theory to treat the size-dependent behavior. In this work, writing differential equations of motion of AFM cantilevers together...

    Abstract
A size-dependent functionally graded Euler-Bernoulli beam model is developed based on the strain gradient theory, a non-classical theory capable of capturing the size-effect in micro-scaled structures. The governing equation and both classical and non-classical boundary conditions are obtained using variational approach. To develop the new model, the previously used simplifying assumption which considered the length scale parameter to be constant through the thickness is avoided in this work. As a consequence, equivalent length scale parameters are introduced for functionally graded microbeams as functions of the constituents' length scale parameters. Moreover, a generally valid closed-form...
