  7. Abstract:
  8. Ship maneuverability is so important from different aspects. According to the regulations of International Maritime Organization (IMO), every vessel has to meet the minimum requirements of mentioned rules. Consequently, prediction of ship maneuverability in early stages of ship design has become to one of the most necessary steps for shipbuilding and design companies. There are a variety of options in order to prediction of maneuverability of vessels, for instance, one important way is Free running model tests which is capable of direct calculation of the required parameters, provided if some certain conditions are met. In this work, firstly, an introduction to the importance of vessel maneuverability and the corresponding simulation methods is presented. In the second chapter, applied hydrodynamic maneuvering forces are discussed; furthermore, evaluation methods and standard tests are introduced. In the third chapter, different ways to properly model of ship maneuverability are discussed. Moreover, linear and non-linear dynamic equations of motion are presented. In the end of this chapter, by means of an appropriate computer code, an example of a linear and non-linear model of a vessel with determined hydrodynamic coefficients is solved and corresponding results are validated by means of existing references. the forth chapter deals with different methods in order to calculate hydrodynamic coefficients of vessels by means of model tests and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In addition, calculated Coefficients for a specific model tested in the Marine Laboratory and the related CFD results are presented. Free Running Model Tests and its requirements are mentioned in the fifth chapter. Furthermore, a model is designed and prepared for these tests. The requirements of the Propulsion system, Guidance and Control of the model are presented. In conclusion, based on developed computer code and experimental approaches, the possibility of simulating of maneuverability is prepared. In addition, model testing by means of remote controlling are discussed thoroughly.
