  7. Abstract:
  8. An important characteristic of sea waves is their high energy density, which is the highest among renewable energy sources. Many different types of wave-energy converters of various categories have been proposed yet. In this thesis the performance of a novel wave energy converter (WEC) is studied. The system, extracts the wave energy from heaving motion of a cylinder buoy in head seas. This heaving cylindrical floating buoy is tested with sinusoidal incident waves in a wave channel in marine engineering laboratory, Sharif University of Technology (SUT). The study begins with a thorough review on types of renewable energy and their application in Iran. Then an introduction to ocean wave, current and tidal, and thermal energy conversion is presented and some literature survey about related studies is reviewed. Chapter 2 discusses various types of wave energy converters. Mathematical expressions of waves and the floating buoy with heave and pitch modes of motion is developed in chapter 3, along with a software development for simulation of wave energy converter using MATLAB programming. Then in chapter 4, the designe and construction process of wave energy converter in Marine Engineering Laboratory of School of Mechanical Engineering is explained. In chapter 5 results of mathematical modeling and model tests are presented and the efficiency of the device using different buoy shapes is obtained experimentally. And finally, conclusion and recommendations for further work are suggested in chapter 6.
