  7. Abstract:
  8. In this study, the influence of multi wall carbon nanotube on the thermal properties and microstructure of open cell flexible polyurethane (PU) foam was investigated. To do this untreated CNT (named here n-CNT) along with three different highly functionalized CNTs having carboxyl, hydroxyl and amide functional groups, abbreviated here by CNT-COOH, CNT-OH and CNT-NH-COR, respectively, were employed. A series of PU foam with and without CNTs (both treated and untreated ones) were prepared by cast molding. Prior molding, the CNTs (0.1 wt% loading) were first dispersed into the polyol (Mw = 3000 g/mol and OH No. 56) and then the mixture was subsequently added to the isocynate (TDI). The SEM analysis showed that the cell size increases upon addition of CNTs. Additionally; it was revealed that the microstructure of PU/CNT-COOH and PU/CNT-OH includes cells with two different scales in size, i.e. micro-cells in foam skeleton with average diameters less than 5 µm and macro-cells with the sizes greater than 200 µm. However, for the PU/n-CNT and PU/CNT-NH-COR foams the cells have always macro sizes. TGA data showed that the thermal stability of foam increases by incorporation of CNT in the order of PU/CNT-COOH>PU/CNT-OH>PU/CNT-NH-COR>Pure PU foam. Interestingly, it was deduced that for the case of PU/CNT-COOH, the extent of enhancement in thermal stability was 31°C in terms of T50 in the TGA curve. DMTA results revealed that the Tg of the PU foams increases (maximum 4 ºC for PU/CNT-COOH) while the damping factor (tan) shows an increase for all CNT included foams (with a maximum value for PU/CNT-COOH). Mechanical test also showed increase in modulus and stiffness in Pu foam with infuses carbon nanotube. Acoustic Absorption Coefficient show improve in nano phase foam.
