Modeling of Anaerobic Baffled Bioreactors for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

- Nowadays anaerobic treatment of wastewater has been gaining more and more popularity. This process is usually used for waste sludge and wastewater with high concentrations of organic pollutants. One bioreactor that uses the anaerobic process to treat wastewater is the Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR). This reactor was studied in the present study. The Anaerobic Baffled Reactor is composed of a series of up flow anaerobic sludge reactors. A simple design, low process cost, low sludge production and the lack of a need for a separator of the gas and sludge are some of the important characteristics of this reactor. Furthermore, ABRs are resistant against temperature and pH and can separate acidogenous and methanogenous bacteria. Determination of the process conditions and monitoring the process are of great importance for properly utilizing bioreactors, for which modeling is a quick and useful tool. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is ideal for modeling complex processes with many variables. Selecting proper structure and conditions for ANNs are crucial for achieving accurate results. In the current project artificial neural network modeling was performed for ABRs using laboratory data from credible journal papers and thesis provided by the advisors. Tens of neural network models were constructed by changing the number of nodes in the hidden layer, the transfer functions in the hidden and output layer and the error propagation methods. The results were compared to the actual laboratory data and the validity of the models was tested using “test” data. Results showed that good accuracy in model results could be achieved if the right conditions were selected for the ANN model. Thus the optimum neural network conditions for modeling the ABR process were presented in this study.
