  7. Abstract:
  8. Flapping wing vehicles produce aerodynamic forces through the flapping motion of their wings. A sample flapping wing mechanism is studied in this project, which propulsion system consists of a battery, a DC motor, a gearbox, a flapping mechanism and a flexible membrane wing. The purpose of this study is simulation of the whole propulsion system through identification and simulation of each sub-system. In the current research, after an introduction to the flapping wing vehicles, literature of the flapping vehicles is reviewed. By studying relevant articles, lack of a comprehensive simulation of all sub-systems is observed. So the goal of this research is obtaining an appropriate tool for parametric study and optimization of flapping wing vehicles. In chapter 2, the main parts of the propulsion system are introduced. Chapter 3 represents the unsteady, 2D aerodynamic model used in this research. In chapter 4, dynamic equations of wing considering its flexibility and aeroelasticity are described. In chapter 5, method of simulation for each sub-system is discussed. In chapter 6, after validating the model, parametric study is done considering mechanical efficiency of the system as the objective function, and effect of different parameters (including angle of attack, motor voltage, EI and GJ) on the performance if the flapping wing vehicle is studied. At the end, some suggestions for the future work are also provided
