- Abstract:
- In this study, the green element method is used to model petroleum problems such as oil production due to expansion mechanism, one and two dimensional spontaneous imbibition and water flooding. Despite of boundary element method that its applications in reservoir engineering are limited to simulation of single phase fluid flow in homogenous media, green element method can solve multi-phase flow in heterogamous media. In this thesis, by this method the governing partial differential equation for these processes are modeled and then solved. In one dimensional medium, green element method can successfully simulate the oil production from heterogamous reservoir due to expansion mechanism. The governing equations for spontaneous co- and counter-current imbibition are modeled using green element method. The simulated results are compared with experimental data from literature. The model is used to simulate the injection of water in core sample. Treatment of normal fluxes to element faces is a big concern for green element implementation in two and three dimensional medium. The classical approach for implementation of method in 2D medium is first introduce by Taigbenu in which normal fluxes in a element are approximated with primary variables on that element. To overcome the inaccuracy of this approach in the heterogamous media, a new algorithm is presented called “degree of freedom zeroing”. Several numerical examples are conducted to check applicability and accuracy of algorithm for variety of engineering problems. Spontaneous imbibition in a 2D water wet matrix block has been formulated using green element method based on the degree of freedom zeroing approach. The simulated oil recovery has good agreement with experimental data. An IMplicit Pressure-Explicit Saturation (IMPES) formulation based on the green element method is presented to simulate the two phase oil/water flow in the reservoir. The developed model is used to predict the performance of five-spot water-flooding. The simulated results demonstrate that green element method has great ability to solve two phase flow in the reservoir. A new formulation of green element method is developed for solve steady state problems in three dimensional medium. The presented framework can be used in future work to solve engineering problems
