  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing use of polymeric materials, especially in the packaging industry, besides the problems that exist in recycling these materials, has become a serious concern for the environment. The synthetic polymers are used widely in packaging industry so they have a considerable role in waste production in packaging industry. One way to solve this problem is adding a natural polymer to the synthetic polymer, as a result it becomes friendly environmentally. Starch is one of these natural polymers which is cheap and has the ability to complete degradation in the environment.using row starch in the polymeric compounds causes a severe drop in compound’s properties. For this reason, row starch must be converted to thermoplastic starch. Many factors are effective in determining the properties of final compounds. In this project, the effects of the different amounts of thermoplastic starch, nanoclay, compatibilizer were studied. For analyzing the effects of these factores on physical and mechanical properties and on permeability of compounds, design of experiment was used. In order to save time and cost in this study, Taguchi statistical analysis was chosen for the experimental designs, the result of the tests and their analysis illustrated that the ratio of TPS to LDPE has the most influence on the mechanical properties and on water uptake of the samples. Furthermore, adding more than 10% of compatibilizer weight has a little effect on the blend morphology and mechanical properties of compounds. Moreover, regarding that the compatibilizer has less MFI than TPS and LDPE, adding a larger amount of compatibilizer disrupts the MFI of final blend. Nanoclay has also the greatest influence on the permeability of gas in the compound. In this study, the influence of different factors has been obtained by using the Taguchi method, and an optimum test has been designed by regarding the result of the tests. It should be noted that the optimal test for each of target functions is different and It is not possible to obtain an optimal situation in which all target functions are optimal
