  7. Abstract:
  8. Nurse scheduling problem has received a great amount of attention during recent years. In this problem number of needed nurses from different skill levels is given for each Location-shift during planning horizon, and the goal is to allocate each nurse to shifts, such that the demand of each location-shift is satisfied. Many researches have been done with the aim of minimizing the number of needed nurses to satisfy the demand of locationshifts or maximizing nurses preferences to work in desired shifts. In this research an integer programming model is proposed to minimize the number of needed nurses and maximize nurses preferences simultaneously. The proposed mathematical model is appropriate for samples with limited values of shift demand, but when shift demands increase it can not solve the problem in a proper period of time. Thus, the simulated annealing based algorithm is developed after proving that the problem is NP-Hard. The results show that the initial temperature, rate of reduction temperature and number of iteration in each temperature have an impressive effect on solutions and the designed simulated annealing algorithm converges to the efficient solution in a reasonable time with average error of 5.49%. In comparison with manual scheduling of head nurse, simulated annealing algorithm improves the unpleasant working shifts and decreases the solving time of problem
