Performance Evaluation and Investigation of Nano-Ceramic Membrane in order to Purification of Hydrogen in Laboratory Scale

- Purification of hydrogen, as a clean source of energy has attracted great deal of attention in recent years. Among all available H2 separation methods, membrane technology has been known as the most appropriate way to produce hydrogen with high purity. In this study, we have tried to synthesis and evaluate the performance of perovskite ceramic membranes. The aim of preparing this type of membranes is to use them in separation processes in order to achieve H2 with high purity of >99%. First, general concepts about membranes are discussed. Then synthesis, recognition and performance evaluation of some perovskite membranes are presented. To prepare membranes, ceramic powders are synthesized by liquid citrate method, followed by compression and drying. XRD, TGA and TPR analysis were carried out to determine the crystal structure, oxygen behavior and thermal stability of the membranes. The results show that ACeYO (A=Ba, Sr, La, Ba0.5Sr0.5) for A= Ba, La, Ba0.5Sr0.5 has a single phase orthorhombic structure. The effect of operating conditions such as temperature, partial pressure, feed flow rate and membrane thickness on H2 permeation flux have been investigated. A maximum permeance value of 1.93 ml/cm2.min was gained at 900° C for a Ba0.5Sr0.5Ce0.9Y0.1O3-s membrane. SEM images and density tests were carried out to obtain the best sintering temperature. Fe, Ni and Co cations were found to improve membrane structure, but they lowered the permeation properties, so that a permeance value of 0 was reported for a membrane doped with Co and Fe
