- Abstract:
- Today, energy crises and the environmental pollution have become serious problems for the human being. To address these problems, extensive efforts have been made to replace fossil fuels with other clean energy resources such as fuel cells. In the meantime, polymer electrolyte fuel cells are very important as they are now commonly used in the field of transportation, and their importance become even more obvious as we consider the fact that the by-products from electricity production by such cells are simply water and heat. This research studies the efficiency of the polymer called “polysulfone” as an electrolyte fuel cell, which has the above named mechanical thermal and chemical properties, , and also, it discusses the effect of nano-particles on improvement of the said polymer. In addition to good thermal and mechanical properties, polysulfone has other advantages like low cost and availability, and with some modifications like sulfonation or use of inorganic nano particles, it can be a good substitute for nafion. In this work, the effect of silica nano-particles with three mass percents of 0, 2, 4 and 8%, and sulfonation on properties of polysulfone’s membrane were studied. For the purpose of the study the effects of nano-particles on their efficiency, the constructed membranes were examined by such tests as sulfonation level, ion exchange capacity, water uptake, SEM and membranes’ thermal resistance was analyzed by TGA.
