- Abstract:
- Drug-eluting bone implant coatings is a new era that has gained a lot of attention in recent years. In this matter, drug is loaded in the coating and local and targeted release of the drug results in preventing the side effects of implantation and increasing the healing process of the patient. The aim of this project was to synthesis the antibiotic eluting chitosan-based composite using electrophoretic deposition for bone implant coating. By using electrophoretic deposition chitosan and chitosan-bioglass composite coatings were synthesized. Then the probability of loading of drug into coating by using electrophoretic deposition was evaluated and by using this process chitosan and chitosan-bioglass composite coatings containing antibiotics was prepared. To evaluate the hydrophilicity of coatings the contact angle of them was measured. Then drug release rate was measured. To ensure the activity of the loaded drug and inducing antibacterial properties, the antibacterial assays were done. The results of this project showed that the electrophoretic deposition is an effective method to load drugs into coatings. By increasing the drug concentration in the chitosan coating, the hydrophilicity of the coating and the amount of released drug and as a result the antibacterial activity of it was increased. Furthermore, in chitosan-bioglass composite besides the increase of bioactivity in comparison to chitosan coatings, hydrophilicity, drug release and as a result the antibacterial activity was increased. The scanning electron microscopy pictures showed that in the process of co-deposition of chitosan and bioglass particles, the bioglass particles were homogenously distribution throughout the polymer matrix
