- Abstract:
- Zirconium is one of the most applicable metals in the production of chemical materials’ industry due to its great corrosion resistance. Coating method of microarc oxidation is a novel method to manufacture oxide coatings on metal substrates. Lots of studies have been done on the creation of these coatings on light metals such as Aluminum, Magnesium and Titanium hitherto; however, there is a scarcity regarding manufacture of zirconium oxide on zirconium metal via MAO method. In the current study, aiming to create proper zirconia coatings on zirconium substrate, firstly, by the change of process parameters like current waveform, electrolyte concentration, current density, time and frequency, various coatings were produced and effect of these parameters on different properties like thickness, roughness and microstructure was investigated. The results indicated that by the increase of current density and time of process, thickness and surface’s roughness would increase as well; on the contrary, these two properties have a decreasing trend by the increase of frequency of current wave. Then, the investigation of phase composition of coatings was done by XRD method. Finally, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of coatings were probed by pin-on-disc and potentiodynamic polarization respectively and the contribution of current density and time on these characteristics was studied too. The results showed that corrosion and wear resistance would increase conspicuously by producing zirconia coatings on zirconium substrate.
