- Abstract:
- Importance: Age related cataract is the major cause of blindness worldwide.in recent years several studies has been done with the aim of understanding the cataract process, but no attempts has been done for simulation and study of the vitreous aging and its effect on cataract.
Objective: To investigation and determination of effective mechanism for increasing oxygen in vitreous humor and simulation the oxygen tension changes with vitreous degeneration with age or vitrectomy. Methods: Effects of changes in chemical composition of vitreous humor with age or vitrectomy on oxygen solubility is studied by thermodynamic relations. The posterior segment of the eye is modeled using transport phenomena relations, then simulated by COMSOL simulation software and the vitreous gel destruction effect on oxygen tension is investigated. Results: Rate of oxygen consumption by the vitreous is 0.8365-0.8374 μl⁄(ml.hr) and this is approximately constant with the age. Oxygen consumption by posterior half of the lens increases with age from 0.0978 in complete gel to 0.2988 μl⁄hrin 90 years old. Oxygen tension in vitreous humor is 10.7 mmHg and 16.35 mmHg in gel and 90 years respectively. Mean oxygen tension behind the lens is increasing consistently from 3.52 in complete gel to 10.76 in 90.Conclusion: Changes of vitreous humor composition with age have not significant effect on oxygen solubility. The main reason of cataract is liquid formation and fluid current generated by convection and movement of the eye.
