  7. Abstract:
  8. The aim of this project is to achieve a semi permeable high flux membrane with a reasonable salt rejection for the treatment of low osmotic pressure water. A thin film composite membrane consists of three polymeric layers was studied in this project. These layers were polyester support, polysulfone sub layer and polyamine selective layer. The polyester support provides the mechanical resistance against the operating pressure. The polysulfone sub layer provides the suitable area for polyamide synthesize, and the polyamide layer is the selective active layer of membrane.
The resistance to water penetration in sub layer was reduced first and then, the pores in the polyamide layer refined by changing the interfacial polymerization synthetic. Reforming the structure of pores in the polyamide layer was done in such a way that the flux enhanced more than 365% while the salt rejection was almost constant.
In order to determine how to change the surface morphology and chemical structure of polyamide layer by changing of each parameter, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR-FTIR) and Contact Angle (CA) analysis were applied. The results of these analyses were compared with the membrane performances on the standard RO membrane test conditions
