- Abstract:
- In this thesis the effect of frame aggregation mechanism in maximizing throughput in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have been investigated. Frame aggregation has become a part of the IEEE 802.11 standard as the amendment IEEE 802.11n. First, we have a quick review on access control layer in IEEE 802.11 standard then illustrate the necessity of frame aggregation. Afterwards, we propose an analytical model for the analysis of an IEEE 802.11n network comprised of an Access Point (AP) and several conventional nodes, all in the coverage area of each other. This analytical model focuses on downlink throughput; therefore only AP uses frame aggregation and the other nodes use basic IEEE 802.11 standard. In our analytical model not only maximum downlink throughput is calculated, but also service time distribution is derived. To this end, we consider saturated state for AP as well as unsaturated state for conventional nodes. Moreover, the using service time distribution the delay is computed. Furthermore, the channel error is also considered in our model. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of our analytical results on AP saturation throughput (less than 5 % mismatches). However, the computation of delay and mean service time in our model are less accurate. Although frame aggregation will result in improvement on throughput, it also causes linear increase of delays for the conventional nodes
