Application of Pore Network Modeling in Study of Rock Typing Algorithms

  8. One of the most important issues in modeling and simulation of reservoirs is determination of different rock types or Rock Typing. In this study, after a brief review of some conventional methods for rock typing, their capabilities have been investigated. In this way, for the first time, pore network modeling is used as a tool for validating the rock typing methods. By using flow simulation in porous medium with pore network modeling approach, similar rock types data have been generated and these artificially data have been used for validating of rock typing methods. To form more realistic pore networks, both regular and irregular pore network have been modeled and analyzed. Pore size distribution, aspect ratio distribution, contact angle distribution, geometry of pores and throats and coordination number of pores (number of throats connected to each pore) are the under study parameters that generate different rock types by pore network modeling and must be recognized by rock typing methods. So, disadvantages of these conventional rock typing methods have been shown. Their main disadvantage is cannot consideration of multi phase fluid in the porous medium like wettability, contact angle and geometry of their pore space that can create new rock types. So, it is aimed to present a new rock typing method that considers these parameters as well as structural rock properties. This new method is developed based on the FZI (Flow Zone Indicator) model, FFI (Free Fluid Index) model, Brooks-Corey capillary pressure model and Purcell equation (the relationship between absolute permeability and capillary pressure) and uses both static and dynamic data for rock typing. It is also shown that the new rock typing method shows a better performance comparing to the similar methods, while maintaining their simplicity in application and can be utilized as an efficient method for rock typing. Finally, the proposed method used in one of the Iranian reservoir and the results compared to results of other rock typing methods
