- Abstract:
- With a surge in consumption of modified binders in recent years, different methods have been used to evaluate the properties of modified binders with relative success. None of these methods are able to fulfill all the requirements for evaluation and intrerpretation of the physical, chemical and rheologocal properties of modified binders. Since rheological master curves can present a mechanical interpretation of the binders in a wide range of times and temperatures, in conjunction with other evaluation metheods, they are considered a promising means of evaluating the suitability of modified bindrers. The available master curve models do not possess the sufficient diversity for this purpose. Their applications are usually limited to neat binders or they are just able to cover a limited range of viscoelastic behaviour of the binders. Considering the deficiencies observed in the available models, a new model was developed in this research for modeling the phase angle master curves of neat and modified binders and subsequently their complex modului. A comparison between the developed model and other available models was carried out for various neat and modified binders. The modified binders used for this comparison were styrene-butadiene-styrene, ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyphosphoric acid and crumb rubber. It was found that the developed model is capable of predicting different irregularities in the modified binders master curves such as the intermediate temperature plateau zone that other available models failed to properly do. Rheological properties of the master curves for each of the modified binders were also evaluated and compared with the results of this model. A practical guide for selecting the suitable master curve model for new binders was finally presented based on the results of all model fittings on different shapes of master curves
