Examining The Relationship Between Motorcycle Crash Severity and Motorcyclist Risky Bihaviors at Iran’s Suburban Roads

  8. Motorcycles are very dangerous as safety point of view and their drivers are more than other vehicles' drivers subject to danger. In recent years, death rate of motorcycles accidents in Iran is increased as much as it has become the government's concern. The purpose of this research is the analysis of the effects of various factors in the intensity of the motorcycles accidents in the national rural roads. In order to do this, the information of the rural motorcycles accidents that are happened in 2010 and the spring of 2011 is used. Explanatory variables are categorized to various factors like perimeter characteristics, driver's characteristics, crash characteristics and the roads conditions. In the first section of this study, using the ordered logit model, the effects of different factors on the intensity of the motorcycles accidents are analyzed. In the second section, effective factors on motorcycle drivers' hazardous behavior are identified by a multivariate probit model. These behaviors include the guilt of the driver in the accident scene, not wearing helmet, and driving without license. Finally, the accidents intensity model is calibrated based on the results of the multivariate model and the results are compared to the model of the first section. Based on the results of this study, factors like the age of the driver (less than 25), not observing the priority law, left or right diversion, disability in controlling the motorcycle and sudden lane change, crashing into fixed objects, pedestrians or lane diversion, head on crashes, crashes happened in holidays, nigh-time or dawn, and non-CBD areas intensify the motorcycles accidents, and increase the probability of hazardous behavior of the drivers
