  7. Abstract:
  8. The Energy Dissipating Restraint (EDR) is a friction device which can be used to dissipate the energy introduced to a structure by a seismic event.A special characteristic of this device is that it is self-centering, which makes it preeminent among other friction dampers. As a result of high nonlinearity associated with the behavior of the EDR, the analysis and performance assessment of the structures which are outfitted with EDR entail quite a few nonlinear time-history analyses. Regarding the substantial computational cost of this method, the existing provisions have authorized the use of more economical alternative methods for the analysis of the structures whose motions are controlled with dampers. However, on account of manifold simplifying postulations, these methods are not reliable for the analysis of such structures of highly nonlinear behavior as the ones outfitted with EDR devices. Endurance Time (ET) method is a novel seismic analysis method in which a structure is subjected to an intensifying excitation. By reasonably estimating the response of structures in several intensity levels through a single time-history analysis, this method can effectively reduce the computational cost. The objective of this research is to evaluate the EDR performance in seismic control of 3-, 6- and 10-story steel structures via ET method, propose a method based on nonlinear spectra in order to improve the ET equivalent time calculation procedure, and compare the results with the ones obtained by nonlinear time-history analysis
