  7. Abstract:
  8. The traditional backup protection system of transmission lines are self-contained and only use from local measurements and generally, don’t use from wide area measurements. Hence, it can misoperate when the power system is extremely under stress conditions. So, the zone 3 of distance relays have been recognized as one of important participating causes of cascading phenomena that lead to major power system blackouts. In modern societies, power systems have become one of most important critical infrastructures, accordingly, blackouts can have catastrophic effects. Therefore, the novel backup protection schemes are required to improve security and dependability of protection system.
In this thesis, a novel adaptive wide area backup protection algorithm is proposed which determines fault line by using only synchrophasors obtained from wide area measurement system (WAMS). This dissertation is the first effort to solve the optimal PMU Placement problem for backup protection and observability. Based on phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement and network topology, Subsets of lines and buses called backup protection zones (BPZs) are formed. After the fault occurs on the transmission network, sum of currents (zero- or positive- or negative- sequence) injected in to the faulted BPZ highly increased, therefore, by analyzing this feature in each BPZ, the faulted BPZ is determined. Next, by using linear least square method with along voltages and currents phasors which are measured by PMUs of faulted BPZ, fault line and fault location is specified. The execution time of proposed method is estimated by 5 milliseconds for all faults. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE 118-bus test system where the results indicate successful wide-area backup protection in a large-scale power system
