  7. Abstract:
  8. In railway transportation network, there are spots that we have to intersect with highway network. These intersections break into two branches named grade crossing and unlevel crossing depend on their structure. Grade crossings from the view of protection are grouped into protected crossings and unprotected crossings. Protected crossings depend on their traffic control devices are categorized into active crossings and passive crossings. There are many factors that influence highway-railroad grade crossing design. Some of these factors can vary widely by drivers' behavior. These factors have been developed in models by AASHTO and its publications and shaped like we have them today. In order to evaluate and make use of these models for different countries there is a need to collect and modify some of its parameters. In this research, a couple of railway-highway intersections were filmed and raw data were extracted from these videos. According to the data, primary database was created and analysis of variables and developing new ones were put to action. New variables were imported to secondary database for farther analysis. Results for calibrated AASHTO model was compared with default values and new sight distances according to observations based on Iranian drivers' behavior were gained. Finally, these new sight distances were put in comparison with AASHTO sight distances. In all cases, sight distances needed for Iranian drivers got higher values than AASHTO sight distance values
