- Abstract:
- Security is an important issue in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs),which are mainly aimed at enhancing safety. Analysis of security mechanisms can help design and implement secure communication establishment methods in such networks. Formal verification is an analysis approach, with the purpose of proving the correctness of a system based on defined precise assumptions. Formal verification is applicable to a vast range of systems, such as time-critical reactive systems. Timed formal verification of cryptographic protocols is a subject that has gained a lot of attention in the recent two decades. The TESLA broadcast authentication protocol is on one hand an efficient, standardized method used for safety applications based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications; and on the other hand a well-known, widely-referenced protocol among time-sensitive cryptographic protocols and has been the subject of several researches in the field of timed formal modelling of security. In this thesis, we verify the TESLA protocol based on a timed model checkingapproach utilizing Timed Colored Petri Nets as the modelling language and CPN Tools as the model checker. In this analysis, we also investigate the impact of loose time synchronization caused by vehicles' GPS synchronization, which is the specific synchronization method in VANETs, on the correctness of the protocol. In this way, a time-dependent attack was discovered on this protocol and a security improvement based on the addition of awareness of loose synchronization to the sender was proposed. Also, in a separate discussion, we calculate the impact of security on safety with regards to the two factors of accuracy and timeliness of received information, by quantifying the relationship between crash probability and security parameters. As a result of these calculations, the importance of utilizing an efficient secure authentication protocol, such as TESLA, was shown
