  7. Abstract:
  8. The most failures caused by wear, fatigue and corrosion are very sensitive to surface of material. Since the most failures starts or occurs at the surface of material, so control and improvement of the surface properties can have a significant effect on increasing the service life and improve the overall behavior of the material. Reforming of the structure and grain size is one of the methods to improve elastic properties, hardness, softness, toughness, etc. Also the macroscopic residual stresses in fracture toughness test specimens, can have tremendous effect on fracture toughness measurements. Many methods are used to modify the surface structure and to create a compressive residual stress in the surface layers. high-energy shot peening is one method of inducing severe deformation to the surface, which leads to compressive residual stress and changes in the structure of the surface. In this project standard test specimens were made of aluminum A356.0. Then the specimens were shot peened creating severe plastic strain and residual stress in addition to causing them to be finely granulated surface. Then the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the specimens were discussed. Experimental results showed improvement of mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, fracture toughness up to 50%, to 16% and 49% Respectively
