  7. Abstract:
  8. Fretting fatigue damage occurs in contacting components while they are subjected to fluctuating loads and relatively small movement at the same time. In this condition some micro-cracks are created in these components. These micro-cracks will be propagated and cause sudden failure which is accompanied by great human and economic loss. There are many practical applications that are subjected to fretting fatigue, such as bolted and riveted connections, bearing shafts, blade-disk attachment in gas turbines, aero-engine splined couplings, cable connections and etc. Fretting fatigue failure process can be divided into two portions of crack initiation and propagation. It is very difficult, to separate the crack initiation and propagation portions of the total life experimentally. Therefore, a numerical approach is a useful technique to model fretting fatigue crack initiation and propagation lifetime separately. The main objective of this investigation is to model fretting fatigue crack nucleation and estimate its lifetime for hertzian and non-hertzian configurations by means of Finite Element (FE) modeling approach. Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) approach was used to extract the equations, criteria and simulation of fretting fatigue nucleation. In order to model this phenomenon, a computer code was developed in Matlab. Two single clamp fretting fatigue experimental test configurations, with cylindrical and flat contacts for several loading conditions was simulated and fretting fatigue nucleation lifetime was estimated for all these loading conditions. The results of developed code were compared with the published results in literature. This comparison verified the used approach and developed computer code
