- Abstract:
- Designing a system based on 2 to 5 MeV electron accelerators for X radiation of urban waste.Nowadays , the use of ionizing radiation in two cases of treatment and removal of contaminants in the waste including; 1) Pathological hospital waste 2) leachate from buried urban waste, which is studied and examined in this project. Buried urban wastes begin to break down under aerobic and anaerobic processes, and as long as the materials are not changed into sustainable materials, these processes will continue and results in landfill gas and leachate. Gas is produce due to anaerobic processes and leachate which is produced through water infiltration (atmospheric precipitation) in the landfill or because of waste water or biological processes. Infiltration of a small volume of untreated leachate to the soil widely contaminates the soil which can in turn contaminates the entry of rain water in underground aquifers and also infects them. The fourth chapter presented radiation structure, protection, and leachate transmission system to the radiation structure and calculations of doses. The calculations of the protection system and the irradiation dose of leachate is performed by using MCNPX code . It should be noted that the effect of gamma rays on leachate is similar to X-rays .To investigate the effects of X-rays on various factors of leachate, first of all, the leachate sample of Kahrizak (Aradkouh) is taken and then transferred to the AEOI for gamma irradiation. And for measuring the following parameters, it was transferred to Sharif Institute of Energy and Water. The values of doses applied to the leachate were as follow: 0.25, kGy, 2.5 kGy, 5 kGy, 10 kGy 15, kGy 30, 50kGy, 70 kGy, 120kGy . The effect of gamma rays on the BOD, COD, pH, EC and DO of urban leachate is investigated. Which ,COD leachate reduction is measured 27% to 81% and BOD 23% to 83% and stabilizing the EC and the increase of pH is found as well. The total number of bacteria in the leachate before radiation was about 130,000 bacteria ,while after irradiation with doses of 0.25, 2.5 and 5 kGy, reach to 23000, 15300 and 5000 respectively. And efficiency ,removal percentage and inactivation of total bacteria is obtained respectively 82.3%, 88.4% and 96.2%. Besides, at the highest dose of irradiation (5kGy), about 96.2% of total bacteria reduced which has been presented in chapter five in detail
