Performance Analysis and Consideration of Steel Shear Walls and Bracing in Irregular Plans of Mid-rise and High-rise Structures

- Plan irregularities of structures due to the governing regional and environmental conditions are a pretty important issue from the architectural as well as structural design point of view. Most of the time, especially in mid-rise and/or high-rise buildings with plan irregularities, dual system of Moment Resisting Frames (MRF), accompanied with shear walls are strongly suggested. Considering the previous works and investigations of researchers, reveals not too many studies and researches in this regards; specially, when it comes into new area and application of the Steel Shear Walls (SSW). In the present work, at first it is proposed to model and analyze a MRF steel structure with plan irregularly. Then, the same structures with conventional bracings, shear walls and steel shear walls shall carefully get investigated. In the next step, designing of the same structures equipped with shear walls and bracings in unconventional and/or irregular positioning will be considered. The studied models will be evaluated from different directions such as period, lateral displacement of the upper floor, story drift ratio, base shear and the displacement of the shear wall versus the frame. Also the highest displacement, velocity and acceleration will be analyzed during different earthquakes in a point of the roof and the highest base shear produced. The design feasibility study shall successfully get performed, based on the verified results and then concluding remarks will be summarized. Finally, it will be possible to consider the variation of behavior factors of archetype structures, which have rarely been investigated previously in such structures. Finally, by investigating the calculated data in this research it is possible to select the perimeter arrangement (braces are located in the perimeter of the plan) as the optimum one
