- Abstract:
- Increasing aviation share in air pollution, population growth, scarcity of available resources such as land (airport), airspace and energy along with uncertainties in air transportation demand and energy market, has motivated the industry stakeholders to push researches toward sustainable models in fleet planning and design. In this thesis we have investigated the suitability of a decision-making model for airline fleet management, based on “Game Theory” and the idea of commercial formation flight (COFOFS). We intend to examine the circumstances under which, an airline needs to substitute a wide-body aircraft with number of smaller ones, while employing the approach of formation flight. Each part of air transportation system including airline, airport, air traffic controller, flying public and regulatory bodies act as an agent, together to shape the airline decision game. The model is conductive in deciding whether a new airplane is, in fact needed. Different case studies reveal that airlines with sustainable formation architecture (SuFA) capabilities have better chances of succeeding in a non-deterministic market competition and could better adopt to different demand sectors. in addition, modeling the competition between airlines as selfish agents based on a none-cooperative game model shows that sustainable growth of air transportation industry requires designing new fleet-based mechanisms to motivate shaping cooperation and alliances between airlines. At the end, a quantitative mechanisme has been proposed from the pint of view of A policy maker, considering the environment by carbon pricing policy according to energy price and demand market cycles to invest in formation flight technology to reach sustainability
