- Abstract:
- Traffic safety is one of the fundamental part of the transportation planning which is led to lowest the number of crashes and its following consequences by in-depth studying. Thus, determining the severity of accidents, including damage, injury and fatal injury is very important. The aim of this study is analysis of the accident-injury severities in single-vehicle and multi-vehicle crashes and providing the policies in Iran. The approach used in this study to select the most effective parameters of the injury-severity is based on the data gathered in Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization during the year 2011. Accident probabilistic model based on analysis of relations among temporal and environmental, driver and transportation modes characteristics. In this study, a discrete choice model with random utility called Nested Logit approach is used for analysis of injury-severities. The results of this research have shown that driving during the times of 12am to 6am increases the likelihood of the injury in single and multi vehicle crashes. Inclement weather enhances the probability of injury. Freeway and rural road boost the likelihood of injury in single and multi vehicle crashes. Soft shoulder causes to decrease the probability of injury in single-vehicle crashes. Among the variety type of single-vehicle crashes, pedestrian-vehicle collision has the most impact on increasing the likelihood of injury. Moreover, among the variety type of multi-vehicle crashes, two-motor collisions have the most effect on enhancing the probability of injury. Head on collision has the most influence on increasing injury compared to other type of directions in crashes. Among the several types of vehicles, motorcycles have the most influence on enhancing the injury in single and multi vehicle crashes, while taxis have the most impact on increasing the likelihood of damages in multi-vehicle crashes. Other safety factors such as seatbelt non-use drivers even the vehicles prove with airbag and ABS are associated with an increase the probability of injury in both single and multi vehicle crashes. Analysis of the causality of accident-injury severities have shown that sleepiness and fatigue enhances the likelihood of injury in single-vehicle crashes. Furthermore, young drivers with ages between 18 to 24 years increases the likelihood of injuries in single-vehicle crashes, whereas old drivers with ages more than 56 years cause to enhance the injury in multi-vehicle crashes. In general, suburban areas with recreational and commercial uses reduces the likelihood of injury in single-vehicle crashes. On the other hand, suburban areas with non-residential uses cause to increase the probability of injury in single-vehicle crashes
