- Abstract:
- This dissertation proposes a new platform and a new software for evaluation of urban Water Distribution Network (WDN) resilience. Resilience is considerd as the ability of an infrastructure to come back to steady state after being affected by any environmental or man-made disturbance. WDN, as an essential infrastructure, has major role on resilience and sustainability of cities and communities. Today, uninterrupted performance of WDN is a basic need of people who live in cities. This uninterrupted performance becomes bolder in face of man-made or natural disasters like earthquake. The uninterrupted performance of a system is dependent on the system’s resilience. Majority of researchers focus on resilient design of WDN and there is a few research that propose a comprehensive platform (including hydraulic and earthquake parameters) for evaluating WDN resilience. In this study, first the important factors affecting resilience of WDN are identified by reviewing available literature. Then by using the identified factors a new platform for evaluation of urban WDN resilience is developed. Subsequently new software that can handle discrete event and hydraulic simulation concurrently is proposed. Finally, the proposed software named REWAT is applied on a real urban WDN. Based on the results, alterntives that can improve system’s resilience are suggested. Results of this research can be used for prioritizing cities for the rehabilitation budget allocation based on benefit/cost analysis. This approach can also be utilized in order to choose better guidelines for rehabilitation of WDN before and/or after a disaster
