- Abstract:
- Today's modern industrial control systems (ICS) and SCADA infrastructures, use industrial networks to communicate with the sensors and actuators installed in the field. In recent years the increase in use of standard protocols in this networks, and also the connection of industrial networks to the internet introduced new challenges in the area of industrial network security. The difference in the property, size, and requirements of this networks in comparison to legacy computer networks have made the legacy security solutions such as firewalls and IDS to not have enough efficiency. Some researches work on implementing new solution to meet the requirements of industrial networks in the area of security. In this research we concentrated our focus on evaluating security threats and vulnerabilities of industrial networks. As there are so many industrial network protocols, we have chosen the Modbus protocol as a case study. Modbus protocol is a well-known industrial protocol that is used in many industrial control systems as the infrastructure of communication. As a result of this research we have implemented a Modbus traffic generator that evaluate a Modbus network for vulnerabilities and threats. This traffic generator is able to generate real and fuzzed Modbus traffic to test the network in different circumstances
