- Abstract:
- Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have developed in recent years and are used in many different applications such as fire detection, military operations, and healthcare. Sensor nodes can sense an environment, sending and receiving information and forwarding packets from source nodes to a sink. These tasks consume large amounts of energy. In many WSN applications, delay and reliability of data delivery and the energy consumption of nodes are important design metrics. Network protocols such as medium access control (MAC) and routing should be designed to improve these metrics In this thesis, we propose a new cross layer algorithm that improves the performance of WSN networks based on these metrics and evaluate its performance. Since our protocol assigns the cluster head role to the sensor nodes with the highest energies each round, energy consumption has distributed uniformly among sensor nodes in the network. As a result, we got less energy consumption in comparison to scenarios using S-MAC and LEACH protocols. Furthermore, there are more data packets delivered to the sink in the [0, 20) milliseconds interval in our proposed cross layer protocol than in S-MAC and LEACH protocols, which means that our protocol has decreased end to end delay for proposed applications. Finally, as different applications have different requirements in term of reliability, we can adjust the reliability of our proposed protocol by changing the number of times a packet can be retransmitted if a sender does not get its acknowledgement back
