- Abstract:
- In Lithium ion batteries, the separator is membrane that placed between the cathode and the anode is one of critical components. Its primary function is to effectively transport ionic charge carriers between two electrodes as an efficient ionic conductor as well as to prevent the electric contact between them as a good electric insulator. The separator does not involve directly in any cell reactions, but its structure and properties play an important role in determining the battery performance. Commercially available polyolefin separators low cost, good electric resistance, high electrochemical stability, and effectively prevent thermal runaway caused by the electrical short-circuits or rapid overcharging, but this separator have some drawback, low mechanical and thermal stability and poor wettability and electrolyte solution uptake coused most published studies in this field recently. In this article polyethylene/sepiolite nanocomposite separator was produced by thermal induced phase separation method. TIPS method is desirable method to produce separator with high porosity and proper porosity size. Results obtains from electrolyte uptake and contact angle tests demonstrates that sepiolite nonofibers couse increase polyethylene wettability and this conclution is increases of separator wettability and uptake. Separator contact angle decrease from 118 to 79 degree and separator uptake was increase from 93 percent to 120 percent. Results obtains from mechanical, Differential scanning calorimetry and thermal shrinkage tests demonstrates good effect of sepiolite nanofibers on developments of thermal and mechanical properties. Yeid strength of sample with 3 wt sepiolite nanofibers was 60 percent more than from pure polyethylene. sample with 3 wt sepiolite nanofibers after 30 minutes stays in 150 C had no size change and shrinkage. Results from ionic conductive test demonstrated good effect of sepiolite nanofibers on increase of separator ionic conductivity
