  7. Abstract:
  8. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) provide high performance, low power consumption, and hence are widely used in the I/O cache of enterprise storage systems and high performance servers. Although employing high performance SSDs in the I/O cache of storage systems significantly improves system performance, it comes with significant reliability threats for write operations upon power failures. In order to provide high level of reliability, storage architectures employ SSDs in I/O cache with RAID-1 configuration, however, such configuration only partially mitigates the reliability issues of the SSDs. In this thesis, we analyze the reliability of SSD-based I/O caches against power outage and high temperature faults. To this end, we first develop a reliability test platform to generate workload and submit requests to the subsystem and inject power outage faults into the SSDs in random time intervals. The proposed platform consists from the hardware and software parts, which are responsible for injecting power faults and detecting different types of failure. We conduct excessive experiments with various types of workloads to examine the impact of workload dependent parameters on the reliability of SSD-based I/O caches under sudden power outage and high temperature faults. Our experimental results reveal that SSDs suffer from different types of failure such as False Write Acknowledge (FWA), shorn write, unserializable writes, flying write, and dead device. Moreover, we observe that other workload parameters such as request size, request type and requested I/O Per Second (IOPS) have considerable impact on the failure rate upon power outages (by 14X, 7%, and 58%, respectively). In addition, the results show that data failure occurs 700ms after issuing the request to the disk in case of sudden power outage. Furthermore, SSDs in RAID-1 configuration experience no data failure under high temperature faults. We observe that the ratio of data failure is significantly affected by the order of disks in I/O caches in RAID-1 configuration where employing a low reliable SSD as the primary disk increases the data failure by 52%
