- Abstract:
- However “The Social Construction of Technology (SCOT)” is the title of a thesis in the domain of Science and Technology Studies (STS), it has an important effect on the philosophy of technology. In this paper I try to elaborate and criticize SCOT’s approach. For this purpose we need to answer the question “what is Technology exactly?”. So in the first chapter, I defined Technology. After reviewing some of it’s famous definitions, I defined the joint of technologies based on the “Dual nature of technical artefacts” thesis. Because of the wide range of technologies, I have concentrated on “Technical Artefacts”, although I was not inattentive to other meanings of technology, especially sociotechnical systems. In the second chapter, I have attended to elaborating and criticizing SCOT. In the third chapter, I elaborated two alternative theses of SCOT, systems approach and heterogeneous engineering, then the “actant-network theory” as the supporter of heterogeneous engineering’s approach. For judging between this two alternatives, I elaborated the “technical design” concept and by it, reasoned for systems approach and against heterogeneous engineering. And finally I added some ideas to systems approach to complete it
