- Abstract:
- The best method for stabilizing sludge is anaerobic digestion, In addition to reducing the amount of volatile solids; it produces biogas, which can be considered as a sustainable energy source for wastewater treatment plants. However, the most important factor limiting the process of digestion is the sludge hydrolysis, the best way to increase the speed of hydrolysis is to pre-treatment the sludge before entering the digester; One of the most effective pretreatment methods is pre-treatment by ozone gas, This gas, which is highly unstable, quickly reacts with the wall of the bacterial cell and oxidizes it due to its high oxidizing properties And accelerates the process of sludge hydrolysis. In this study, the effect of ozonation on the process of anaerobic digestion of waste thickened active sludge of Tehran wastewater treatment plant was studied. In this research, using the dozes 0.05 (gO_3)⁄gTS and 0.1 (gO_3)⁄gTS, and considering the time of 10 days for sludge digestion, the amount of produced gas pressure increased by 276 and 250% respectively at the end of 10 days relative to raw sludge. In addition, the amount of VS digested sludge from 75.8% for raw sludge decreased to 68.98% and 72.18% respectively. Volumetric dewatering also increased from 50% for raw sludge to 57% and 63%, respectively. In conclusion, ozonation pretreatment (0.05(gO_3)⁄gTS) increased the performance parameters of the anaerobic digestion such as biogas production, VS reduction and dewatering but higher dose of ozone (0.01(gO_3)⁄gTS) decreased biogas production and VS reduction
