- Abstract:
- Polycarbonate (PC) is known as one of the engineering plastics with remarkable mechanical properties, but the application of this polymer is limited due to its high notch sensitivity. Blending polycarbonate with other polymers such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a method to resolve this disadvantage. PC/ABS blends are commonly used in automotive industry, electrical and electronic devices. As PC and ABS are not completely miscible, a variety of compatibilizers are used to achieve a suitable microstructure and high engineering properties. Considering crucial applications of PC/ABS blends, different flame retardants are also used to reduce the flammability. These flame retardants usually have negative effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PC/ABS blends. Therefore, producing flame retardant PC/ABS blends with high mechanical properties and suitable microstructure has been considered by researchers in recent years. In the current research, two compatibilizers were used to enhance the compatibility of PC/ABS (70:30) in the first step. After optimization of compatibilizers content according to microstructure and mechanical properties, two types of halogenated and phosphorous flame retardants were used to improve flame retardant properties. The effect of using both compatibilizers and flame retardants on samples were studied. One step and two step methods were used to fabricate halogenated flame retardant samples and eventually were compared with each other. After preparation of samples using extruder and injection-mold, their morphological, mechanical, thermal and flame retardancy properties were investigated. Compatible samples containing 15 wt.% of phosphorus flame retardant and compatible samples containing 8.8 wt.% of halogenated flame retardant showed the best performance in mechanical properties and flame retardancy (V-0 in UL-94 test and improved impact strength). This study resulted a suitable method for producing compatible and flame retardant PC/ABS blend which can be used in future industry researches
