- Abstract:
- In this study, modification of Polyvinylidene fluoride membrane in order to reduce membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors is investiged. To achieve this goal, chemical modification and grafting methods were used. Initially, by chemical modification, the reaction was made to make hydroxyl groups on the membrane surface. The hydroxyl functional groups were used as a site for connecting of subsequent monomers. Finally, the lysozyme enzyme was used as the main modifier to improve the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of the membrane surface. To evaluate the performance of the modified membrane in comparison with the pristine membrane, different tests, such as water contact angle test, pure water flux test, and fouling resistance test, were used. An scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was used to investigate the pore size and surface structure. Also, a attenuated total reflection-fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) test was used to study the functional groups on the membrane surface, and the success of chemical reactions. Zone of inhibition test was used to investigate the antibacterial properties of modified and pristine membranes. The result of the modification was a membrane with higher flux recovery ratio, antibacterial property and hydrophilic surface. The result of the modifications was the reduction in the contact angle of water from 81.237 ° for the pristine membrane to 46.255 ° in the modified membrane, increasing in the flux recovery ratio from 43.72% for the pristine membrane to 52.98% for the modified membrane, Reducing in the total resistance from 76.92% for pristine membrane to 59.78% for modified membranes, Creation of antibacterial properties in the modified membrane and favorable flow Compared with pristine membrane
