  7. Abstract:
  8. This work is mostly about the analysis of direct position determination (DPD) approach as an emerging approach in source localization. Different aspects of this localization has been considered and some improvement techniques has been addressed. DPD is known as a replacement for the conventional 2-step localization approach in which the location of the target is estimated via the estimation of some interface parameters such as time of arrival, angle of arrival and etc. The main focus of this thesis is on the sensor placement problem in DPD in order to find an optimal configuration for the sensors to achieve the best accuracy in the estimation process. In this regard, the formulas of the optimal sensor placement of the DPD has been extracted from signal model. We’ve shown that the optimality criteria in both DPD and 2-step approaches gives the same formula asymptotically. Based on this result, optimal sensor placement form different signal models and measurements has been derived.
We’ve also investigated some difficulties induced by practical considerations existing in the real world. This practical assumption makes it impossible to apply the theoretical optimal placement formulas obtained in the results. Thus we introduce sequential approach of placement which is suboptimal but applicable to the real world localization systems specifically the hybrid of stationary and moving sensors systems.
The next work covered in this thesis is the application of the DPD in the forward scatter radar. Indeed in this part the DPD approach has been applied to forward scatter radar (FSR) which is a specific type of bi-static radars. It has been shown that the DPD provides a better accuracy in this radar compared to its two-step conventional counterpart. The cramer-rao lower bound for both approaches has been derived and compared to prove this result
