- Abstract:
- The low female labor force participation rate in the Iranian labor market relative to the global average and even to countries that do not differ significantly from the socio-economic characteristics of our country is one of the important questions of the Iranian labor market. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether the economic participation rate of married women will increase if the gender gaps in wages, job findings and job losses among women and men are eliminated in the Iranian labor market. To answer this question using household expenditure and income data and labor force data, we show that between the two categories of occupations, in terms of the share of women's employment, their education and gender gaps in wages, There is a difference in finding a job and in losing a job, according to which the jobs in the labor market are divided into two categories of occupations with fewer physical work or white collar jobs and occupations with more physical work or blue collar jobs. Then, using a structural model for married women’s decision between the three options of unemployment, employment in white collar jobs and employment in blue collar jobs, and estimating the coefficients of the model, we examined the effect of removing the gender gaps. Findings show that the removal of gender gaps in wages has the greatest impact on increasing the participation rates of women, especially women with diploma or less. Eliminating the gender gaps in the likelihood of finding a job increases the rate of women's participation with a university degree, and eliminating the gender gap in the probability of losing job has a small effect on the participation rate of married women
