  7. Abstract:
  8. Procurement management is one of the main knowledge areas of project management which is of high importance. Traditionally, procurement of construction projects is hard and time-consuming. With the advent of building information modeling and the capabilities that it provides tp project managers, procurement management of project can be facilitated. In this research, a semi-automated framework based on BIM is presented to improve procurement planning process of construction projects in Iran. In this regard, by identifying the capabilities of BIM as well as the limitations of procurement system of construction projects, this research has provided a framework to semi-automatically generate the optimal material ordering plan using genetic algorithm. The proposed framework has been evaluated in a case study project. It was implemented in construction phase of a casting workshop for erection of the steel structure of the project. Implementation of the developed framework has reduced project procurement costs by approximately 2.5%
