  7. Abstract:
  8. The process of urbanization and the dramatic increase in residential population lead to significant development in urban area, especially in metropolitan areas, and cause unpredicted challenges for transportation planning and the mobility of dwellers and products. One of the most heated discussions in urban transportation planning during the last decades is devoted to the nexus among urban spatial development, sprawl and poly-centricity phenomena, and urban transportation system parameters. Definitely, the drivers' behaviors have also altered rapidly during this process. Besides, the complicity of the nature of transportation models for predicting the travel demand of system is inevitable. These essential factors require a substantial and meticulous research in order to scrutinize and address the primary demands of urban residents in terms of transportation and provide a reliable atmosphere for their daily communication. The simultaneous consideration of the above factors has gained little attention in the realm of research and it seems vital to pay more attention to fill this knowledge gap in urban planning. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the variations of the urban transportation system parameters in the process of urban spatial development during the time, and also assess the validity of demand models which have been calibrated during origin-destination surveys, by aasuming the structural variation of urban spatial indicators and resulted transportation system paramters. Shiraz metropolitan area has been considered as a case study in this study by using three data-sets resulting from origin-destiantion surveys which have been conducted during the previous three decades with the urban spatial development information. The results of this study show that the structure of Shiraz metropolitan area has changed from mono-centeric pattern in 1990 to leapfrog pattern in 2018. Urban sprawl has not increase the average travel distance significantly and the phenomenon of poly-centericity is the major cause of this occurrence. In addition, enormous rise has been occurred in the ownership of private vehicle and the number of drivers’ license owners. For instance, 330 percent increase in the number of women who own drivers’ license from 1990 to 2018 has caused an unpredicted travel demand for the Shiraz metropolitan network. There is not any remarkable variation in the travel behavior of passengers and the main cuases in the process of residents trip characteristics variations are the changes in the structure and pattern of Shiraz metropolitan area, government policies, changes in the structure of households, and the higher percentage of trip productive group of residents in the age pyramid of 2018 in respect to 1990
