  7. Abstract:
  8. Greywater accounts for about 70% of household consumption and can be returned to the consumption cycle if a sustainable system is built in residential areas and the treated water can be used for irrigation, flash tank filling, and even aquifer fillings. The purpose of this study was to establish a sustainable method in small treatment plants that could sufficiently recover the water used in households. In this study, chemical ways of wastewater treatment, as well as membrane filtrations, were investigated to reduce greywater pollution. The results show that the coagulants alone can remove 80% of COD. Membranes can also reduce COD by up to 83%. In addition, the best removal efficiency using coagulants and activated carbon for COD would be 88%. In addition to filtration tests, the use of lime, acids, sodium hydroxide and polyelectrolytes as assistants have also being investigated and turbidity removal of 94%, TSS 82%, phosphorus and ammonia above 70% and fecal coliforms by 100% were achieved. With these characteristics, treated greywater can be used without limitation to Iranian standards for irrigation, discharge to surface water and recharge wells and to Japanese standards for both irrigation and flash tanks. Parameters such as flocculation and low solubility of coagulants were the main obstacle during this study. In future studies, it is recommended that all solutions be made on the day of the test and that general sewage conditions including turbidity remain constant to evaluate a specific parameter during each jar test
