- Abstract:
- Time-Modulated Array is known as an electrical beamforming technique that has lower cost and complexity compared to the conventional beamforming techniques. In a Time-Modulated Array, the antennas are turned on and off periodically, so the harmonics of the switching appear in the spectrum of the signal. The radiation characteristics of the array such as Side Lobe Level and beam orientation can be controlled at these harmonics, also known as sidebands. The capability of the array in creating multiple simultaneous radiation patterns has paved the way toward employing this technique in wireless communication applications. In this thesis we explore the basic fundamentals and the characteristics of the array and investigate its pros and cons in details. Based on this study, we propose a mechanism to improve the radiation efficiency of the array. We have designed and fabricated an 8-element array and measured its characteristics in an anechoic chamber at different sidebands to verify our proposed technique. In addition, we have proposed a new architecture to add polarization diversity in a wireless communication system using Time Modulated Array. We have shown that the array is capable to support multiple clients with full diversity gain. This feature is a perfect choice for environments, which experiences high fading wireless channel. The proposed architecture is designed and tested in an anechoic chamber. The results indicate that we can achieve the desired level for polarization diversity in the communication system
