  7. Abstract:
  8. In this research, the numerical simulation of the natural convection is performed by using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics based on the artificial compressibility method. For this aim, the formulation of the artificial compressibility method in the Eulerian reference frame for the mass and momentum equations is written in the Lagragian reference frame and the Lagrangin form of the energy equation is also considered to compute the thermal effects. The benefit of the artificial compressibility-based incompressible SPH (ACISPH) method over the weakly compressible SPH (WCSPH) method for computing the natural convection is that there is no need in the formulation considered here to use any approximate enforcement of the incompressibility condition that usually causes to use a large magnitude speed of sound and a small time step size in the simulations. For the sake of validation, the natural convection problem in a square cavity is simulated for different Rayleigh numbers and the results obtained are compared with those of a grid-based method. The study shows the artificial compressibility-based ISPH method is suitable for modeling the natural convection problems. A trapezoidal cavity problem is also simulated to show that the applied solution method is capable of modelling the natural convection in relatively complex geometries
