  7. Abstract:
  8. The purpose of this research is to study the behavior of some kind of conventional and retrofitted Khorjini connections, such as stress and strain concentration and eventually strain-jumping phenomenon. Thus the software ABAQUS 2019 was used to fabricate the FEM models of the connections with experimental prototypes. In analytical studies, 21 specimens with different sizes of the connection components were analyzed. True stress-strain curves for steel and weld materials were used and damage initiation and revolution were considered in the weld material. Also cracking of the welds was considered by a micromechanical method. The main defects of the connection are severe initial stiffness deterioration and Strain jump in the connection critical weld which cause the failure of connection before the failure of the beam. So effects of two different retrofitting methods on improving the behavior of the connection were investigated. In the first method different number of stiffeners were placed in the angles of the connection. Results show that this method has no considerable effect on the connection behavior. In the next method, four plates which were placed between the web of beams and edges of column flanges and welded to the column flanges’ edges and beam flanges and web, were added to common details in order to improve connection behavior. Analytical results indicate that stiffeners do not considerably decrease stress and strain concentration in the connection welds, and also the rotation of connection at the moment of failure is less in retrofitted connections than conventional connections. Finally, 6 frames with Khorjini connections have been fabricated and after the analysis, the behavior of connections has been investigated
