- Abstract:
- Despite progressive trends in road safety, thousands of people die in road accidents, and millions are injured each year all around the world. The consequences of traffic accidents are not limited to injuries or fatality. Yet, they have a wide range of indirect economic and social effects, such as the financial burden of medical expenses or young labor loss. Therefore, the need to improve road safety and reduce road accident rates is essential for all communities. The first step to improving road safety is to build a reliable accident information management system. Accident information management systems are effective platforms in the design of highways and vehicles. They also present valuable information and insights such as information about the cause of accidents, the effectiveness of safety improvement strategies by providing an environment for maintaining and updating the accident database. This research focuses on providing a new framework for managing accident information by using BIM tools and software. In the initial phase, a comprehensive literature review has been done to identify the shortcomings and flaws of current accident data systems as well as road safety management institutions' requirements. Consequently, BIM is selected for proposing the framework due to its capabilities. A BIM-based framework is then designed to collect descriptive accident information along with geometric parameters of roads and road safety equipment structures' data. Finally, the accident information management model for the Tehran-Qom freeway was implemented based on the proposed framework. In conclusion, the purpose of providing this framework is to keep accident information along with information on the design and maintenance phase of road infrastructure, prevent duplicate data entry and increase the accuracy of recorded information. Moreover, users can utilize the visualization capabilities of Revit software and color-coding features to enhance making decisions
