  4. Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a growing concern in urban areas in the developing countries because of its potential to aggravate cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. Traditional approaches in monitoring urban pollutants have relied on ground-based networks even though they essentially provide point measurements and are inadequate for health alerts on large spatial and long temporal scales. Recent advances in satellite imagery has attracted managers to look into this new alternative as a predictive tool for improving air quality at urban and regional scales by providing necessary data in advance of the onset of actual severe conditions. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites is routinely providing the daily distribution of the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOD) values that can be used for tracking aerosols on a daily basis with a resolution of 10 × 10 pixels (1 km nadir resolution). This study was undertaken in an attempt to establish correlation between MODIS-derived AOD values and ground-level PM concentrations in Tehran using data from summer 2005. The database consisted of monitoring results from 10 different local monitoring sites containing PM10 (3 stations) and TSP (7 stations) values. Daily and hourly TSP values were 122.6±30.5 ug/m3 for heavy traffic stations and 83.1±41.1 μg/m3 for light traffic stations. Concentration of PM10 for light and heavy traffic stations were 106±37.4 and 82.8±32.5 μg/m3, respectively. The results indicated a good correlation between ground PM10 measurements and MODIS derived column AOD values in some stations. For TSP values, ground concentration and satellite AOD correlation (R) was higher with a range of 0.7-0.8 while PM10 measurement R values were 0.3-0.4. It is suspected that lower values for PM10 correlations were due to less frequent calibration of the instruments
