- Abstract:
- The relationship between art and philosophy has been disputed for a long time and its history goes back to the ancient Greece. The dominant literary form at that time was poetry or tragedy, which are the first side of this relationship. On the other side was philosophical ethics. Plato and Aristotle are the main protagonists in this quarrel, which is known as the "Ancient Quarrel". I will first examine this quarrel and follow its different forms in the modern era, in which Hegel plays a prominent role by proposing the "end of art" thesis. By examining the criticisms made to this thesis, I will make clear the context in which the contemporary defenses that I explained in the following chapters. Then, I will discuss two different points of view, both of which have turned to the defense of literature in different ways. Martha Nussbaum, the prominent figure of the first perspective, which uses the Aristotelian tradition as the criterion for her work, acknowledges the contribution of literature to "morality" and its role in cultivating our "practical wisdom." On the other hand, Michel Foucault and his peculiar understanding of "experience" has recently led to a series of studies that have dealt with the relationship between this experience and literature. Finally, by moving to a more comprehensive level, i.e., "ideology", which covers the previous two discussions, I will conclude the work by examining a perspective that emphasizes the existence of a special and reciprocal relationship between "literature and ideology"
